A LITTLE CONTEXT

How it works

Use percentage difference when neither quantity is a baseline. It uses their average as the reference and always returns a non-negative result.

THE FORMULADifference = |first − second| ÷ ((first + second) ÷ 2) × 100

For example Difference between 100 and 120 ≈ 18.1818181818%.

Good questions. Simple answers.

Is difference the same as percentage change?

No. From 100 to 120, percentage increase is 20%, but percentage difference is about 18.18%, because its reference is 110.

What happens if one or both values are zero?

One zero and one positive value give 200%. We define the difference between two zero values as 0% for this calculator. Negative quantities are not supported.
