How it works
Compare a new value with its original value. For a positive starting value, a positive answer indicates growth and a negative answer indicates a fall. Signed values use the formula literally, including the sign of the starting value.
Increase = ((ending − starting) ÷ starting) × 100For example 100 → 125 = 25% increase.
Results display up to 12 significant digits. JavaScript floating-point arithmetic approximates some decimals and large integers. Round monetary results to your currency’s precision.
Good questions. Simple answers.
What if the ending value is smaller?
The result is negative. From 100 to 75 the increase is −25%, which is a 25% decrease.
Can the starting value be zero or negative?
A zero baseline makes percentage change undefined. Negative baselines are accepted using the signed denominator: from −100 to −50 the result is −50%. This sign does not describe ordinary growth; interpret negative baselines with care.
